A long and frustrating job search is difficult for anyone to swallow. But letting those negative feelings show could be detrimental to your progress.
It can be hard to combat the feelings that come along with a strenuous job search.
Frustration, mental fatigue, anxiety and negativity are all normal feelings. Unfortunately, it’s easy to let these kinds of emotions eat away at you—sometimes, to the point where you fail to express how grateful you are for the new opportunities presented to you during your search.
And whether you’d like to believe it or not, your lack of gratitude can certainly affect your job search. In fact, many job seekers might not even realize that they’ve been subtly expressing signs of their ungrateful attitude until it’s too late. It’s your job to stay aware of your actions when handling your employment search.
Here are four ways that being ungrateful negatively affects your job search:
1. You think you deserve any or all positions you apply for
While it’s important to remain both positive and confident during the application process, acting as if you deserve a position can create a catastrophe. There are many consequences that can come from this kind of ungrateful demeanor.
When a job seeker feels like they’re owed a position, preparation could fall to the wayside. Research and preparation are a necessity when it comes to the application and hiring process. When applying for a position, the right amount of preparation is required to ensure that you’re well-versed on the company and the position and that your application materials are up to par for the position. As for the interview, simply strutting in unprepared and feeling deserving isn’t going to get you hired—but it will certainly remove you from the running.
2. You don’t say “thank you often” enough… or at all
The way you show your gratitude means a lot to your potential employers. In fact, more than 75 percent of interviewers say receiving a thank-you note impacts their decision-making process. A simple “thank you” and a handshake while exiting your interview just doesn’t cut it. Don’t frighten away your potential employers with your lack of manners.
Be sure to send a thank-you email and a personalized handwritten thank-you note immediately after your interview. This will set you apart from the competition, some of who probably overlooked the importance of saying “thank you.” Stay grateful by remembering how fortunate you are to have received an opportunity to interview with the company.
3. You don’t network properly
The ability to show your gratitude while networking is essential. An ungrateful outlook can leave you disrespecting your current and potential networking contacts in such a way that could ruin your chances for advancing your career. This might mean that you’ve been overlooking opportunities to thank them for their generous advice, hours of time and even for all of the people they’ve helped connect you with during your job search.
Combat this potential situation by spending more time thanking your networking contacts. You can do this in the form of an email, handwritten note, phone call or even by picking up the tab the next time you go out for lunch. Always remember that your networking contacts are using their valuable time to help benefit your job search; that fact alone should make you feel grateful.
4. Your attitude suffers to the point where potential employers notice
Nothing deters a hiring manager like a poor attitude. An ungrateful attitude could contribute to a perception of arrogance or negativity that certainly won’t impress anyone, particularly in an interview. Nothing creates a more awkward and troublesome experience for a candidate than a negative interview—and that’s if you even make it to the interview stage at all. Some hiring managers are able to pick up on poor attitudes from cover letters and resumes. Focus on expressing a more grateful attitude by keeping positive body language and eye contact.
Remaining grateful could potentially send your job search in a new direction. You never know what could come from going the extra mile when expressing gratitude for your circumstances.
