Boilerplate emails get you nowhere when networking. Try these real-life examples of witty and personalized emails that actually worked instead.
It’s beyond time the boilerplate “attached please find my resume” emails be put to rest. Job seekers hate writing them, employers hate reading them and they do nothing to make you stand out as the candidate to beat. Nor do canned “nice to meet you at [networking event here]!” messages.
What really gets people’s attention–whether you’re networking for yourself or for a friend–are witty, personalized and (dare we say it?) somewhat brazen emails people will remember. Mandy Stadtmiller at xoJane shares examples of the actual messages she’s sent to various contacts that have resulted in successful connections for both herself and her friends. As she writes:
Keep in mind, both Madeline [a colleague] and I didn’t apply for traditional “jobs” at xoJane. We pitched ourselves and the jobs were created. Mine took a year, but if I hadn’t planted the seeds early on, it never would have happened.
Here is actual language I’ve used that has gotten me or friends in the door over the years. Feel free to gank and customize as you will!
