I get by with a little help from these quotes.
Words can provide a lot of inspiration in our lives. They make us rethink our perceptions and give us hope when times are tough. This is especially true when it comes to recruiting. Surprisingly, however, there’s a dearth of great recruiting quotes to keep us motivated professionally.
Luckily, there’s no lack of quotes from other smart and inspirational sources. Sure, FDR might not have had recruiting in mind when he said “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself,” but the sentiment still applies in tricky recruiting situations.[jumbotron background=’#f6f6f6′ color=’#000′]

Here are seven famous quotes that might not have originally been about recruiting, but are still valuable to those in the field:
1. “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”
— William Shakespeare
Recruiting wasn’t even a profession when the Bard wrote this line, but it works. In a lot of ways, our perception plays a huge part in how candidates appear to compare. For the most part, skills and experiences aren’t pros or cons; it’s when we consider them in terms of the position that they seem that way.
Remember when looking for candidates to dig past the superficial qualities and really get to know them. Assess their resumes from different angles and you might see something you originally thought was bad is actually good.
2. “Not all those who wander are lost.”
— J.R.R. Tolkien
Job hoppers. They’re an employer’s worst nightmare. Many believe evidence of job hopping on a resume is big red flag against hiring the candidate. So the job seeker gets passed over because it’s assumed they’ll just quit this job as well.
But that’s not necessarily the case. Changing jobs frequently does not inherently mean the person is a bad or disloyal employee. There might be other circumstances — like being a military spouse — that have caused them to move from job to job. What you can be sure of with job hoppers, however, is they’ve had a wide range of experience that could be beneficial to an employer.
3. “I failed my way to success.”
— Thomas Edison
Along with job hoppers, many candidates get overlooked because of previous career mistakes. Maybe they realized they were in the wrong industry and are trying to switch, or they remained stuck in the same job for too long without getting promoted. Whatever the case, it’s caused their resume to be less than ideal.
However, as this recruiting quote reminds us, great success stories can come from failure. As long as a candidate has the basic job requirements covered, offer them the chance to wow you in an interview. Many times, it’s the job seekers who have faltered that end up to be the best and most surprising employees.
4. “There is nothing permanent but change.”
As new technology has proven in recent years, nothing stays the same in the recruiting world. There are always new tools, techniques, and trends to stay on top of. And if you’re not willing to change as well, it’ll be hard to stay ahead.
5. “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”
— Henry Ford
Relationships are crucial in recruiting. You have to find ways to make all the moving parts of the process run smoothly between yourself, candidates, employers, and your co-workers. Any tension or miscommunication can lead to disaster. It takes a lot of patience and understanding to keep everyone working as a team toward the same goal: fill those positions.
When recruiting begins to frustrate you, remember this quote. It might not be easy, but building and maintaining those relationships are important.
6. “Luck to me is something else: Hard work and realizing what is opportunity and what isn’t.”
— Lucille Ball
When a recruiter finds a great candidate who’s absolutely perfect for the position and the company, it’s common for them to say they got lucky. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. You find amazing talent because you put in the hard work and you see something in a job seeker that others didn’t. By acting on that opportunity, you made the magic happen.
Don’t discount your abilities and work by giving undue credit to luck. Celebrate your success and be proud of what you’ve achieved.
7. “Alas! Earwax!”
— Albus Dumbledore
On the flip side, sometimes a candidate you thought was perfect turns out to be huge dud. And that can be incredibly frustrating. But just as Dumbledore continues to give Bertie Botts Every Flavored Beans another shot in hopes of finding a delicious one, you need to accept the mistake and keep on trying.
Recruiting is a wonderful and exciting job. But sometimes even the best of us need a little bit of inspiration. Remember these recruiting quotes so you can be even better at what you do.
