If maintaining Twitter, Facebook and Foursquare accounts for the Travel Channel sounds like something you’d love to do, listen to this interview.
So there’s this awesome job, the sort of job you’d just die to land (and tell your friends about)! But the awesome job isn’t nearly like the job you have now. So how do you make it from current job to awesome job?
In our new podcast series, we’re hoping to provide insights and answers to that very question. We talk to young people who have amazing jobs or are doing something really cool and interesting and ask them how they did it. So listen along for good information and some inspiration, too.
This week we spoke to , social media and digital platform strategy manager at the . Nisha’s job involves managing the Travel Channel’s social media accounts on different platforms (, , etc.), figuring out how to incorporate the latest digital trends into the Travel Channel’s online strategy, and um, watching Travel Channel shows. Not gonna lie, it was a little hard to pretend I wasn’t jealous in our interview… I mean that’s a !
In the interview, Nisha talks about how she got the job, what skills you need to land a job like hers, thoughts on working after hours and more. Here are some snippets from the interview, which have been slightly edited for context.
On not discussing her age:
I’m obviously young … when you’re young and you’re early in your career, people tend to not want to take you seriously, especially if they know how old you are.
I think young people tend to emphasize their age, and emphasize and tell people that they’re recent college graduates, which I don’t think is something you should necessarily ever give away. I don’t think your age is anyone’s business, and I think as long as your work is good, your work should speak for itself.
When people find out that you’re looking for a job, they really want to help. They want to connect you with people, they want to tell you about openings at their company. So just being upfront about that is to your advantage. You have to demonstrate that you know how to use the platforms strategically.
On the qualifications needed for a hot social media job:
To work in social media professionally, you can’t just [use it to chat with your friends]. You have to know how to use the platforms a little more strategically.
